2020 – Words To Live By

Over the last several weeks, I have been praying on three words to live by in 2020. Two years ago, I chose minimalism (updated from frugality), grace and truth. Last year, I chose wisdom (seek), honor (speak), and joy (share). These six words I still carry forward with me into 2020.

As each year passes and seemingly at a faster pace, the three words to live by have become more meaningful and perhaps more urgent. I am not suggesting anything prophetic in that statement, but I have come to realize over the past several years that I continue to remind myself daily the question:

What is my priority in life?

Some when asked that question may further state, “that depends on what phase of life I am at the present time.” I may have answered the question the same way when I my children were young and still under my care or still in college. Yet if I knew then (or better, if I had believed then) what I know now is that my priority is not ever-changing. It is the same as it always should have been. My priority is my purpose.

Hindsight is 2020

The three words I have chosen for 2020 are three words with that priority in mind. In other words, stop talking and start doing.

Silence (verb)

From Dictionary.com:

• To put or bring to silence; still
• To put doubts, fears, etc. to rest; quiet

Most times that I have wanted to accomplish something important personally, I allowed doubts and fears to either paralyze me to misdirect my attention. It is way past time to silence that nonsense if I truly believe the priority in my life is important.

Commit (verb)

From Dictionary.com:

• To consign for preservation; to commit ideas to writing
• To entrust, commence
• To do; perform

Have you noticed that most “C” words instill a sense of fear? “Caution,” “Cancer,” “Change,” for example? The word, commit is can certainly strike fear in anyone where the priority in one’s life is asking to take on a responsibility that may affect a change in another person’s perspective in mind, body and spirit. But if that priority is worthy no matter the difficulty, how can one ignore this consignment?

Fulfill (verb)

From Dictionary.com

• To carry out, or bring to realization
• To perform or do, as a duty, obey or follow as in commands
• To satisfy (requirements, obligations, etc.)
• To develop to full potential

In the words of the Nike slogan, “Just Do It!” As Nike so aptly tells us in this simple statement if not in simple action, is if anyone is to reach their full potential it is to bring that priority in life into realization.

So, what is it that I am afraid of that causes me not to satisfy the priority in my life?

What do I have to silence and entrust to God that will bring to realization my purpose here?

2020 is about just doing it. For the love of scotch! Just shut up and do it!

Am I optimistic? Optimism is psychological.

Hopeful, is more appropriate because hope is theological. It is based upon my relationship with God and He with me. It is interesting to me that we are so impatient with God to answer our prayers, yet He is so patient with us. If God is truly THE priority in my life then it is past time to live by these words in 2020 to silence the doubts, commit to action, and to fulfill what He has purposed me to do to reach my full potential. And in doing so, I hope I can affect others in a positive way in mind, body and spirit.
